Social Security benefits are not paid automatically to the surviving family in the event of a loved ones death. An application must be made and specific documents must be furnished.
WHEN AND HOW TO FILE A CLAIM: Call Social Security toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. any business day to obtain an appointment Do not delay filing for benefits if you can't get all of the following documents Try to get the following documents before your appointment and bring them with you. To facilitate receiving Social Security Benefits, you may need the following original or certified documents:
In addition to other Social Security Benefits, a one-time death benefit not to exceed $255.00 may be available to: A Surviving spouse who lived in the same household as the deceased person at the time of death, a surviving spouse eligible for or entitled to benefits for the month of death or a child or children eligible for or entitled to benefits for the month of death. The Price Funeral Chapel will complete a "Funeral Directors Statement of Death" which can help in applying for benefits. It usually requires about two months for a survivor to start receiving Social Security Benefits.
